The Most Valuable
Thing in the World? Some say Truth, others say Time, still others
say Knowledge, Love, Life, Virtue, Freedom and Nature. With the
passage of millennia, the debate still rages. Here at 10kTruth,
we're very fond of Steinbeck but ultimately leaning towards the
head of the dead cat.
"Loyalty
is priceless and
Is neither sold nor bought.
Alas, how few who seem to know
Its value as they ought."
Thornton W. Burgess, Bowser the Hound
"Every mystery
box sold comes with a guarantee that there will be something of
value in it."
Michael
Logsdon
"I've got a better
idea."
"Who said that?"
"I've got an idea forming in my head."
"You haven't had an idea for thousands of years."
"There is a place where we could find the greatest thing a man
could want. The goal of everybody's hopes and dreams."
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"The most fabulous object in the world."
"That sounds like a good idea."
"Yeah."
Terry Gilliam's TIme Bandits, 1981 Fantasy Comedy Adventure Film
"The most valuable
thing in the world is the truth; so valuable that it has often
been barricaded by a bodyguard of lies."
Winston Churchill
Sozan, a Chinese Zen
master, was asked by a student: "What is the most valuable thing
in the world?" The master replied: "The head of a dead cat." "Why
is the head of a dead cat the most valuable thing in the world?"
inquired the student. Sozan replied: "Because no one can name
its price."
"And this I believe:
that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most
valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom
of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this
I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government which
limits or destroys the individual. This is what I am and what
I am about. I understand why a system built on a pattern must
try to destroy the free mind, for that is one thing which can
by inspection destroy such a system. Surely I can understand this,
and I hate it and I will fight against it to preserve the one
thing that separates us from the uncreative beasts. If the glory
can be killed, we are lost."
John Steinbeck, East of Eden
"And what is the
most valuable thing in life? It is, quite simply, the association
of a perfect human being."
Bhakti Siddhartha, The Most Valuable Gift
"Harvard cost me too
much for what it taught me; but it charged me nothing for the
most valuable thing I got there, my friends."
Henry David Thoreau
"(Time is) the
most valuable thing a man can spend."
Theophrastus
"Truth is the
most valuable thing we have. Let us economize it."
Mark Twain
"The most beautiful
thing in the world is, of course, the world itself."
Wallace Stevens
